being a tree,waiting for rabbit
2017-2019, China
The name of this project is a play on words with a traditional Chinese idiom which means ‘inactivity in anticipation that everything will come by itself.’ By changing the words, the meaning shifts from waiting for events to being an active participant, taking things calmly and easily as they happen.
In this work, I used polaroid shots and embroidered them with threads to explore the question of manipulating images. Polaroids are often considered the least manipulative form of photography since they capture a snapshot of reality with the press of a button. However, by using traditional embroidery techniques, I introduced intentional alterations to the photographic reality, blurring the lines between truth and lies.
This type of work also served as a form of meditation for me. While embroidering, I was able to disconnect from my perception of reality, meaning, and objects depicted in the polaroid and instead focus on the process itself, existing without regard to time.»
